Everyone Wins at ISSC in Breckenridge Colorado

We all won during the 24th Annualbreckenridgeissacolorado Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge, Colorado.  Not only were the sculptures fantastically creative but the process is so much fun for everyone to watch.  Residents from Breckenridge homes and others coming to view properties available in the Breckenridge Colorado real estate market picked a great time to visit.

ISSA Breckenridge CO real estateAnd coming from around the world to join the host Team Breckenridge were 15 excellent groups of competitors:  USA/Wisconsin, USA/Colorado/Black Forest, Spain/Catalunya, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, Russia, and Mongolia with two teams.

Judges were looking for “a piece that is original, detailed, moving and inspiring.”  The awards ceremony took place on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 4:00 p.m.  Team Breckenridge joyfully accepted First Place for a sculpture representing childhood winter play.  ISSA Breckenridge Colorado home

Lisa Pogue at blog.breckenridge.com connected with Chef Keith Martin, captain of Team Breckenridge about the idea and he explained.  “As kids, we would look outside at the snow and imagine what the day of fun would have in store.  Sledding, snowball fights and forts to be built.”  Many adults consider the snow a burden but “Not us here in Summit County.  We still look at the snow outside with that same imagination we had when we were kids.”  Tim West, Margo Jerkovitz, and Tom Day rounded out the Team Breck.

ISSC Breckenridge ColoradoGermany took Second Place with their sculpted stack of discs set in balance and USA/Wisconsin took third placed with an exotic tropical sculpture

The climate in our beautiful Breckenridge surroundings is perfect for snow sculpture.  Beginning January 13 and ending February 2, 2014, the exciting ISSC process lasted three weeks.  The first week was Technical Week when volunteers built 12-foot blocks of snow, each weighing 20 tons.  Before the days of snowmaking machines, these blocks required great time and energy.  Volunteers stomp the snow, packing it into the molds.Breckenridge Colorado ISSA

Teams are given 65 hours to complete their works of art.  Sculpting began January 21 at 11 a.m. with the pop of a gun.  Sculptors had till January 25 at 10 a.m. to finish.  During the final night, most teams were up to the wee hours finishing details.  The teams are only permitted the use of hand tools for sculpting.

ISSA Breckenridge ColoradoThanks to our superb winter weather, sculptures remained on display through Sunday, February 2, 2014.  People from throughout Summit County real estate and Eagle County and along the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains had plenty of time to marvel at the ice creations.  And international skiers enjoyed the icy marvels, too.  We are already looking forward to the 2015 Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships here in Breckenridge Colorado and invite you to join us then.Breckenridge CO real estat
